West Point Military Academy was credited with inventing the "negative" reps. It did so for pullups.
If you don't have access to a pull down machine then try this:
Do 4 sets of 10 reps on your pullups. Do as many reps as you can for a normal pullup and the balance of the 10 reps do as "negatives". That is stand on a chair and then step off and allow yourself to lower as slowly as possible.
At some point you will be able to do 10 conventional reps. At that point abandon the negatives. They are an inferior way to train. The main advantage for this application is that no additional equipment is required. If you are training 800 cadets this can be a major factor.
