I think one always has to look at personel value versus cost when deciding whether something is expensive. It was a chuck of money ($350 + tax) for me. I raided vacation savings to buy it. But, I need to log workouts and I do not have the displine to write everything down. The watch does this for me. Now, if it only record strength training :) . It does let me know exactly what I am doing. When I bought shoes (which I thought were expensive at the time) I was told they would last me about 6 months. Seeing the wear I have already put on them I believe that estimate. That means I paid for the watch only a little over shoes are going to cost me in a year. I think there are alot of people that can easily do the things the watch does on their own so do not need an expensive gadget.

Okay, now I know there is definitely something wrong with me. When I signed up for the running course 2 months ago I put in for comp time for the day after the group run to stay home and recover from the run. So I am off work today, but I feel fine and I am not tired or sore at all. If fact I really want to go out and run. I know it would be stupid because I would be asking for trouble in the long run if I did. But, I got to get out of the house so I going to go to the lakefront and take a walk.

one gets addicted to the adrenaline of running, used to be I'd weight train in the a.m & feel the urge to run at night last year, but I didn't for the exact reason the body needs to rest, though I'm sure a leisurely walk is ok.

Today is another rest day. Tomorrow I am going to run hard day. I think I will do a 30 minute run while trying to shave a bit of time off mile pace from last Tuesday.

I want to put a few of goals in writing. I am using goals to keep me in the mental state to keep myself going on this fitness quest. I have short time goals to mentally give myself some immediate gratification. I have some mid timelength goals to give myself some milestones that are not too distant, and I have some long term goals. The long term goals are to make help make this journey a lifetime one. Whenever I make a any goal I am going to replace it with a new one. So here goes..

Short term.

Run 30 minutes without walking while posting a sub 14 minute to the mile time.

Get weight below 244 lbs. This was a mid length goal and a milestone. But, I think I will reach this weight within the next 30 days. 244lbs means I passed the halfway point to total weight loss goal. (190)

mid timelength goals

Run a 5K race in under 38 minutes -- I want to eventually replace this with run a 10K

reach a total weight of 190 lbs. In the beginning this was major goal. It is indeed a big milestone, but it no longer THE BIG ONE.

long term

maintain a weight of 190 and keep working out for two years -- remember when I reach one goal I must replace with a new one. (change it to five years then)

THE BIG ONE -- I have been thinking about this one for awhile now. It is also one of those bucket list items and I am reluctant to put it in writing. But, I know what it is

Hi Edgar

You commented on journal, so I thought I'd take a look at yours, and -wow - I'm so impressed with what you've managed to achieve! And your enthusiasm seems as high today as when you started.

I've run in the past, but I stupid injury made me feel nervous about starting again - the most I run at the moment is a mile on a treadmill.

I'd love to know what you BIG ONE is though - but as a newbie I probably don't have any right to ask

Heck, I'm a newbie too. You right a right to ask anything you want within reason. I just ain't ready to say yet, but I will eventually

I did run on the lakefront this morning and I finally got the heart monitor to work.

"Run 30 minutes without walking while posting a sub 14 minute to the mile time."

Okay I am going to say I did not meet this goal yet. average pace for the half hour was 13:12, but I did mile 2 at 14:10. I really only want to push myself at this point once a week. I will really get this goal next Sunday.

I am not so sure I now really want the heart monitor information. Even though I averaged 118 bpm I spiked from time to time to the high 160s. I weighed in today at 253. Thats another 2 lbs. I am now 8 pounds aways from crossing the halfway point in weight loss. Sooner or later I am going to have to get a new picture taken of me. I no longer look anything like profile pic.

I have mixed feelings about this mornings run. goal today was to run 5K without going into a walk. For some reason it was a struggle to run today. I purposely started at a slow pace because I was going to run nonstop a distance I have not gone before. After the first kilometer I wanted to pick up the pace but I found myself already running out of steam. It was not wind I was having trouble with it was legs. legs felt tired and without much strength. I was felt like I was in agony, but I really did not want to let mind stop me. I was running on the lakefront and I think the only thing that kept me going was when I cleared a certain area I was able to see the North Ave boathouse up ahead. I looked at watch and saw I had 1.5 km to go. Shortly after that for some reason I began to daydream and did not realize it until I had a half km to go. I sprinted the last 200 meters which told me mind is what made me go so slow. The bright side is I know I will be able to run an official 5K race without walking. Heck, someones got to take up the rear.

You don't give yourself enough credit :!: You are doing great - congrats on getting yourself through it, sometimes the mental battle can be more challenging than the run. So be proud of yourself for finishing :D

I still have have 2 months before I run a real 5K race. So hopfully I will have a lot less weight to carry on the distance. But, I know I can finish one now because I can do it in training.

Since you are starting now, just think what great shape you will be in when you hit that age bracket - you will blow them all out of the water 8)
