I believe hip abduction exercises (the machine or with cables) will work the outer part of the glutes. But read the warnings before doing those exercises - too much of abduction or adduction can cause problems with your gait. Moderation is the key.

Personally, I'd say don't be afraid of muscle. Muscle can come in a lot of different forms. Bodybuilders want to pump up the muscle to make it look big, while a strength trainer just cares about how strong the muscle is, while someone like a swimmer wants the muscle to be lean. I did more research and found that the "calories burned" calculations are only really accurate for steady state cardio where you get into at least "zone 1". They cannot be used for sedentary activity, like watching TV. (For those activities just take a fraction of your BMR/RMR.) ...
