What am I doing wrong?

Post by Jup1ter »

Hi folks,

I'm a 23-year old currently weighing around 110 kg. I'm 6 feet tall and am of a fairly muscular build. For three months now I've been on a diet of 1900 calories per day, doing press-ups and 50 minutes of kettlebells (8kg weight) on one day, followed by a 10-mile cycle over hilly terrain taking 45-50 minutes on the alternate days. Despite this I've not gotten noticeably slimmer! I'm definitely fitter and a little bit leaner, but after three months of that diet I was expecting to at least drop a jeans size.

daily intake consists of porridge in the morning together with a protein shake in water (25g of protein), lunch is a tin of tuna (30g of protein) and dinner is never anything unhealthy (usually potatoes, broccoli and a chicken breast or something). I then have a second protein shake (25g of protein) in water in the evening before going to bed.

Should I replace the kettlebells with more cardio stuff if I want to slim down, or are lack of great results down to diet?

I'd really appreciate any help!

You could be building a bit of muscle, which will help to burn an extra 45-50 calories per day for every added 1lb.

The thing is though, you would then be replacing most or all of the lost fat with muscle.

This just means you're developing a more preferential muscle to fat ratio, but I think your calories could still be higher and I wouldn't have tuna evey day, because of the metal content. Tuna is reccomended at around 3 portions a week these days, so swap it sometimes for things like chicken, turkey, beef etc, assuming your disclosure of the tuna referred to an everyday event and not just that particular day.

I would increase the calories some way to allow for more muscle building potentaial, but also to allow for more cardio fuel. You could do this by adding another meal between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner that has around 250-300 calories in it, so you're calories per day increase to around 2,400-2,500 approximately.

You may find this more beneficial in the long term.

response was going to be the same, meaning that you have probably gained some muscle. Jeans getting tighter in the legs while becoming noticeably slimmer is a sure sign! :D
