Question about DEADLIFTS.....

I've never really done Deadlifts, and I was curious how they relate to squats....

For simplicity sake, let's say that I can Squat 100lbs 10 times....What weight should I be able to deadlift 10 times??????

i just started dead lifting recently too, start very light until you get the right form, say around 60lbs since your squatting 100lbs, then after a while add more as your able to do it, thats what i did 8)

In weight terms Deadlift weight will vary.

If you do something like Smith Squats, Deadlift weight could be about 10-20% higher when you're ready to start maxing for Reps.

If you do free weight Squats, Deadlifting would yield when maxing for reps, roughly about 3 times the weight.

The main difference is Deadlifts hit things like Illiocostals and Erector Spinae in the lower Back. There is more Back emphasis than Leg Emphasis.

I think therefore you could potentially do them in the same session, without overdoing it on Legs, say if you added other Leg exercises to your Squats.

So which one is it....

Should I be able to Deadlift 60% of squating weight or 3 times as much as squating weight???

I just explained, it depends on whether you Smith Squat, or Freebar Squat, as to the level of lifting difference between said Squat type, and Deadlifts.

It was all self explanatory really :).

providing you actually squat properly you shoudle asily be able to get deads wt up on par with it in a 6 weeks if taught properly too...if you don't squat properly than the muscles used for the deadlifts (glute and hams mostly) won't be strong enough as you'll be very quad dominant so will probaably take twise as long as you'll need to learn squats peoperly and deads at the same time...technique is paramount for both more so than wt

squats and deadlifts have always been very similar in weight. If I go heavier on one, it is usually deadlifts, though only marginally so. The key, as someone else mentioned if form. Y

ou can do squats and deadlifts in the same workout, since, as the Boss Man says, the deadlifts bring into play a ton of other muscle groups, particularly in the back to move the weight, which is why it is a great mass building exercise (not that the squats aren't of course, because they definitely pack on the muscle too!).

Also I think Deadlifts are a bit safe when trying to Max out as you can easily drop the weights if you feel you are going to miss it.

you wouldn't do both ehavy in the same workout though...go for heavy wt for one of them and then prcactice form with higher reps for the other and vice versa
