Stationed in Afghanistan not a lot of choice

Post by Gordylll »

Currently I am deployed to Afghanistan. I am at 213 and would like to drop to around 190. I have a very good workout coach who pushes me everyday (high reps low weight for cut and tone). The issues I am running into are the meals we are actually offered. Let me state firstly that I am not on the ground in convoys and the nature of job has me tied to a desk for 12hrs a day. So daily routine will not allow a "eat whatever, your metabolism is sprinting all day" mentality. I also work nights so food selections are reversed. The following is a basic daily set of meals for myself

7pm - Multivitamin (centrum or military knock off brand)
8pm - Fish (if they have it) turkey (if they have it), 2 servings of a mixture of vegetables
12pm - Flour 8" wrap with 4 slices of deli turkey, 2 slices of pastrami, 1 cup of white rice
2am - Workout
4am - 1 cup of white rice
6am - 4 Egg whites, 1 cup of shredded turkey, diced onions omelot
2 turkey sausage links
1 cup of oatmeal (no brown sugar just straight oats its gross haha)
2 200 ml boxes of Grapefruit Juice
10am- melatonin + Sleep

I really feel in body that I am loading at the end of the day and I think that is hindering me. Any food suggestions, supplements, or the way I am eating that can be changed I am all ears right now. Thank you in advance

Hi there :).

Why high reps, low weight? Why not low reps high weight?

What does your military want, soliders who look a bit buff, or soldiers that can carry heavy stuff quite quickly, which won't be the case training like you do.

Check out post on multi-vits. If you can do any of the tests, all the better.

You're not having a massive amount of Carbs it would seem, but you might be as well to stop having the Flour content in the midday and change it for something Veggies as an example.

Also the Deli turkey might be quite high Sodium. I appreciate it is hot and you might sweat a lot, but too much Salt could cause water retention and possibly mild Kidney issues.

I respect your situation and the lack of choice. The obvious thing to me is to cut the juice boxes - there's probably 40 grams of sugar or more there, which nobody needs.

How do you feel overall? Do you think you could cut the juice boxes, and eat a piece of fruit instead of the white rice after your workout? You would get the vitamin C without the insulin spike.

Why high reps, low weight? Why not low reps high weight?
Sorry I transposed that I meant low reps high weight, also this is not for them per say its more for me. I am good as far as military standards go (considering I am getting out after this tour yay) but its more for myself. I know I want to get weight to a manageable level for when I get out. I have cut out the rice as you suggested and replaced it with more vegitables and consumed an extra can of V-8 to get more vitamins going. I do believe the water retention is what I am facing now. Any ideas on how to get past that? I am trying to avoid salts now for that reason but most stuff here is presalted because of the amount of people they have to feed its all processed foods.
The obvious thing to me is to cut the juice boxes
I did that (probably going to get fruit if they have it) and I also replaced the whole milk with soy milk to avoid the fats (I am a country boy and that was a very hard thing to do haha)
I sleep fairly well with the assistance of the melatonin (we have F-15's out here and they use afterburners day in and day out so its next to impossible to fall asleep) and I wake up very tired until I give metabolism a jolt with a quick jog to the shower tents then I am good. I just really want to get the last few layers of fat off me I am at 20% right now and would like to be under 12% within the next year. Also I apologize for not responding sooner its somewhat hard to get time out here but I do appreciate the responses.

Exercise when you wake up might help rev your metabolism for the day and push you past that plateau.

I've been going to bodyrock.tv for home workouts and I think they're really great - most of them involve zero equipment, and average about 15 minutes of high intensity effort. Try it out and let me know what you think, if you have time.
