Hello,
I am interesed in looking into obtaining a Nutrition Certificate to become a nutrition consultant. However I do not have a degree, just High School diploma with some college courses.
In order for me to pursue this as a profession do I need to obtain a degree or is anyone aware of people getting in the field with a certificate only?
Please advise. Would an AA degree with a certificate be good? I just can't see at 34 while working going back for bachelors at this point. I want something attainable that I can see that doesn't require school for the next 10 years.

Hello there,
Many people call themselves "nutritionists" without any formal education, thus it is a non-regulated term and anyone can use it.....although this does not mean that they may not have the knowledge, just no specific recognized credentials. There are a few routes that you can go. 1) You can get a Bachelor's degree in nutrition or dietetics from an accredited college, complete a 9 month internship and pass a national exam to become a registered dietitian (RD) 2) You can get an Associate's degree from an accredited college, complete 450 hours of supervised experience and pass a national exam to become a DTR (Dietetic Technician, Registered) which I am. These are regulated credentials that only those who have completed the requirements can use. Organizations like hospitals, schools, nursing homes, or public health facilites where you will practice nutrition (counsel people on the specifics fo nutrition) will require a degree and in some states licensure.
