Whats the theory behind how muscles grow?
I know it may sound like a stupid question but it is one i havent asked before, i may already know the answer but i just wanna make sure
Say your doing bicep curls as an example, you find a weight you can manage for 5x5
once you are finished (and have done all your other exercises) you stretch down and finish for the day
So what is happening to the bicep at this point??
after post workout nutrition and eating your remaining meals, what is now happening??
and the following day???
how would the outcome change if it were a heavier load/lower rep scheme, would the muscle need more nutrients/time to repair, would the muscle grow larger
through the greater pressure it has been put under having to lift heavier weight, even though for as not as many reps??

Re: Whats the theory behind how muscles grow?
firstly, scientists don't even know for sure how muscle is built
without getting into too much detail i'll give it a shot going in step form
step 1 - you train with wts which are hopefully progressivley heavier or where the muscle/s are exposed to a progressive stress (reps, wt, sets etc) which causes muscle damage in the form of small tears
step 2 - you drink a protein shake and as the muscles are basically protein, they go straight to the muscles (so the sooner the better) where they start to rebuild the little tears from training
step 3 - just like broken bones that go through rehab to progressively get stronger and come back stronger then they were before the injury, so does the muscle and wholla, you're huge!!
a very quick rundown yes ands there a host of other factors at play here for it to work
calorie intake - if you don;t eat ebnough cal's you won;t grow...most don't realise that they need calories to run the body for an entire day no matter how easy the day is (base metabolic rate) then add in any accidnetal activity you do (run for the train) then add in any actual exercise you do (wts/cardio), then you need to add more to actually recover to the level you wwre before the day's session and finally more again to put you over the hump so that the body actually supercompensates your nutrient storage so you store more then you normally could
sleep - you grow when you rest...if you're always running around the body won;t bother with trying to add more muscle and thus more bodyweight, it will want you as light as poissible to make it as easy as possible
stress - outside stressors whether physical or mental are vital...if you'r body perceives stress (even if you don;t) then it will stop building muscle (the point above), and actually store fat in a starvation/famine type of situation
that is it in a nutshell

Wow. We actually agree on something 100%. (Folks, this stuff must be true.)
Re: Whats the theory behind how muscles grow?
This is actually the 2nd time both Swanso & Packard agree on something… But this time, Bossman wasn’t involved…Packard wrote:Wow. We actually agree on something 100%. (Folks, this stuff must be true.)

WOW for sure… I agree with Lu.. Great question & Answer!
Re: Whats the theory behind how muscles grow?
Agreement from two of our finest, certainly does drive the point home.....

If I thought people were actually reading posts I would take a good bit more care in what I wrote.Lesplease wrote:Third. The other one was that guy that beat himself with a bat for muscle growth.
