Post by Bonnie »

I'm not sure how pertinent the issue of the foods listed in your food tracker containing salt is, though I utilize it daily & Im noticing there r not many " no salt options " most food r listed, " with salt " lol personally from amount of salt, I could salt front porch through all of next winter :)

Prior to new lifestyle I salted everything without even tasting first - now I salt nothing and don't miss it - but yeah, even without adding salt the daily consumption is unbelievably high!

I read a long while back that salt consumption affects the blood pressure of about 30% of the population. The rest are not affected at all. The problem is that the cost of the lab tests that determine if you are in the 30% or the 70% is quite high and so doctors just tell people to cut out the salt.

Must have been iodized. Those of us with thyroid conditions need to avoid anything with iodine in it. Sea salt is the way to go! (In moderation, of course...I gotta tell you, I used to eat a lot of salt/soy sauce, and after cutting back on it for a while, I can REALLY taste it when things have a lot of sodium. It tastes kinda gross now.)
That is only for Hashimoto's hypothyroidism which is an autoimmune disease, correct? Some other types of hypothyroidism are actually treated with a Tyrosine/iodine combo.

Oddly enough, not only can iodine be used to treat hypothyroidism, but too much can cause it as well.

Amatlack, I've read some interesting things about how to treat Hashimoto's without medication. I don't want to put you on the spot, of course, so if you're ever interested, let me know.

I'm done, now. Sorry for the hijack! :D

To knowledge iodine can be a blessing or a curse depending on whether you have Hashimotos, Graves or Hypo or Hyperthyroidism.

Also Cruicferous vegetables like Broccoli, Cauliflower etc etc, could be an issue, as they contain Goitrogens.

In opinion salt is a spice; it is not a medicine or food supplement.

If you ask ocean and sea marine life they would say its a necessity. Too little and they die, too much and they die. Hmmm, maybe we could learn something here.....?

In line today at the local sandwich shop, the lady ahead of me ordered a foot long club sandwich (turkey, ham, & roast beef) on white bread with various toppings. I thought it looked pretty good and almost got a 6" one myself, thinking it can't be too bad since it was lean deli meat. But being the creature of nature I am, I opted for a 6" tuna on whole grain - healthy, right?
I think there is a national crisis on hidden sodium in "healthy" foods. Many people are fooled into thinking that it is healthy as long as it is lowfat. I checked out the sodium contents on that foot long club sandwich - 2320 mg!! And that doesn't include the cheese and mayo. But it only has 10 g. fat. tuna sub I'm sad to say had 930 mg of sodium! :x And 30 g. fat!!! Ugh! (that only allows me 9 g. of fat for the rest of the day according to diet profile!) No wonder I like them so much  So I guess I will be cutting out "take out, fast food" and trying to be more like Nokie and Cassie and all the rest of you folks that prepare your own and pre-pack your meals the night before. That way, I can be more in control of what goes in it and how much. It is not that hard to do, just takes a bit of planning. I spend nearly that much time everyday at lunch trying to decide where to go and what is the least damaging lunch food I can find.
It is just sad that so many people are unaware of how bad pre-processed, frozen "diet" foods, and fast food "healthy" meals are for you.

Before, I never look at Fats or Sodium or any other nutrition facts. I usually only look at calories per serving. Until I started to read about Tranfats and health stuff. Now, I’m pretty picky when I by pre pack stuff. Some package says… only 250 calories but the sodium is about 2,000-2,500 mg and trans fat of 10-20g. Yikes! (I think it was a breakfast egg sandwich Croissant) not exactly sure how much but it was something crazy like that!

Oh man... If I don't watch salt intake I will look like an oompaloompa the next day. I think when you really start to monitor it you start to notice how much of a difference it can make to water retention.

Yes, I highly recommend just bringing your own food to work instead of eating out. I think its cheaper this way... plus its easier to track macros and you know exactly whats going into your food. I always wonder who's spitting in food... and who used the bathroom and didn't wash their hands then handled food.

It would be nice to live in an environment where salt wasn't added to everything! Excuse me... sodium alert is beeping, I looked at ham today at the supermarket then at the cheese and then at the crackers.

ahhhh,

there is no easy way, just practice I suppose.

cheers
