Iron

Post by ilurvebroccoli »

Hey everyone. I was told that I have anemia, so I need more iron. I take a Womens Multivitamin daily, that has 100% iron. Though I know theres only so much your body can use from a non food source. What other foods can I get iron from?

I'm not big on red meat, so anything else that would be good sources of iron would be great.

Thanks for your help.

Iron come in two forms. Heam in Flesh and Fish, and Non-heam in plant matter.

Heam absorbs at around 15-20%, Non-heam 5-10%.

For yonger women, Iron needs to be about 14-15mg's a day at least to account for the Iron you lose during your female Cycle.

Whole-grain offers the best source, as many Whole-grain cereals, are fotified with Iron and B's.

Also Amino Acids, Vitamin C and Capsicum have been shown to boost Iron effects, so I believe, probably why Heam is better absorbed, as many plant sources only have around 80-90% of the Amino Acids found in Animal, Shellfish and piscine matter.

Iron is abundant in lots of foods, so Whole-grains, Meats, Fish, Soy, Liver, Broccoli, Legumes, etc etc will deliver what you need.

Also Multi-vits can sometimes be poorly digested. If you're concerned by this, try a site called Consumerlab.com, for unbiased supplement reviews.

If yours is listed on it, they will tell you the ups and any possible downs, in relation to other similar products.

doctor prescribed a ferrous sulfate pill for me to take. I am suprised they didn't tell you either how much or specifically what to take- or give you a prescription. I would definitely contact them back regarding that.

I was also told to space out the multi-vitamin and iron pill, as your body can only absorb so much at one time. She told me to take one in the morning, and one at night. And also, they said to take the iron pill with something acidic, orange juice, etc. to aid in the iron absorption. And to take the iron pill about 2 hours before or after any milk/dairy consumption, as that can inhibit the iron absorption. That's what the pharmacist, and later a dietician that I spoke to, told me.

Yes there is some correlation with Vit C and Iron boosting, as well as a mild counterproductive effect with Calcium and Iron.

Consumerlab needs a subscription. Perhaps a new thing I'm not sure. A little bit dissapointing really.

You should ask your dr about how much he/she wants you to take

GNC has two different Irons, and Ironchel 18 and Womens Iron Complete

Ironchel 18 is 18 which is 100% of the daily value
Womens Iron Complete is 30

I am anemic and was also just told to take an iron supplement i take the Ironchel 18 on a daily basis and switch to the Womens Iron Complete during that time of month when i need more iron
