Is weight loss legit?

So I signed up here a few weeks ago, and am basically just monitoring calorie intake, and calorie burn via cardio, usually biking, and some jogging. (Weird, it says I've been signed up since September 3rd, but I've got 5 weeks worth of weigh-ins)

I'm 5'10, 29 years old, and started out at 196 lbs. I weigh myself once a week, in the morning. First week I dropped a pound to 195, same the second week to 194. Same the next week to 193. Then the next week I lost 2 pounds, down to 191. Then just this week, I lost 3 pounds, bringing me down to 188. I'm not trying to lose any more than a pound a week, and while I have changed diet a bit by cutting out soda and a lot of fatty foods, I haven't been starving myself or been doing anything drastic. So the three pound loss this week kind of startled me. I was happy about it, but want to make sure I'm doing it right, and taking off the right kind of weight.

Am I actually shedding fat, or was this week a fluke?

Hi there!

Congrats on the weight loss!

The 3 pound weight loss could have been the result of water weight. Have you been drinking the same amounts of water each time you weigh in? weight can fluctuate by as much as 5 pounds from day to day depending on how hard I've worked out, how much I've eaten and how much water I've drank. You might consider having your body fat measured and go by that figure instead of the scale as the scale can be decieving.

Are you doing any weight training?

Well, I don't have the resources to have body fat measured on a weekly basis, so the scale is all I've got to go by. And as long as I'm seeing a sonsistent weight loss, I'm not worried if I go slow, I was just wanting to make sure I wasn't losing too much. And as far as weighing goes, I basically just weigh myself first thing in the morning before breakfast or anything, so I haven't eaten or drunk anything. And I usually don't eat after 7 or 8 pm the night before either. So it should be pretty consistent. Although I am weighing myself with clothes on, so that can fluctuate. Actually, I was wearing shorts today, and normally wear pants, so that could account for a half a pound or so I guess.

No, not really doing any weight training right now, other than pushups. I'm doing the hundred pushup program found at http://hundredpushups.com, and it's great, but I'm basically riding about 14 miles a day on bike as a commute. When winter sets in, and I can't ride bike anymore, I'm going to replace it by going to the gym and doing more weight training, and less cardio.

if you want something better than the scale do tape measurements which can be found in the tracking portion of this site. Also, take photo's of front, back and side in your bathing suit.

These are more reliable than a scale on tracking your progress. If you gain a pound of muscle and have a loss of a pound of fat, will the scale move? How do you know the change took place? If this continues over a months time, will you get frustrated because the scale doesn't move? So many people overlook these facts and give up when they are so close to acheiving success when all they need to do is find a better tool to track their progress. Initially its the mirror that tells us to get into shape, not the scale, then it becomes the scale that we try to please instead of the mirror. Why?

No don't apologize, that's great advice. I will stop staring at the scale so much and try to use other methods like you mentioned. Thanks for the tips!

So incase there's any new members reading this, happy 3008, and I hope you find old posts interesting. I'm dead now, but don't let that put you off.

Most of what I wrote here is still relevant, and yes the Reccomended Daily allowance for most Micronutrients, still applies to Venusian Bogbeasts, so you guys must have adequate daily amounts of Iron, Copper and Water, to keep your subcutaneous slime levels healthy, oh and go easy on the Caffeine, that stuff can interfere with slime reabsorption. The scientific evidence is on Pubmed dated 2056 :wink:.

That looks like good advice. I've been having a few problems with energy levels lately during Cardio. I've just started training for a 10k interplanetary Bog Swimming comp, so I think I'll try increasing Broccoli and other Leafy greens in diet, and could probably stand to cut back on intake of Scuzzlebugs.

Though I'll probably have a Scuzzlebug or two once a week with a cheat meal :wink:.

you need a more balanced program OR do a 100 row program (there isn't one)
