It all depends on how much sleep you get. If you go to sleep at 9 PM and wake up at 1 AM it won't be good, but if you get to sleep at least 7-8 hours it does a lot for you. Obviously it'll positively impact your energy level the next day. In addition, most of your actual muscle growth and recovery occurs when you sleep, which makes a good night sleep invaluable. 9 isn't a magic number, it's just a pretty good guarantee you'll get enough sleep unless you need to be up before 4 AM for some reason.
the more sleep you can get before midnight the better...i'm not sure why but i've read it 1000 times...probably to do with circadian (body) clock which wakes up at 6am or something...since i started working earlies everyday i have the light off by 10pm with the alarm going off at 4:55am so 7hrs or thereabouts does me with no naps during the day...can't even really sleep in anymore either really
It depends largely I think how your body responds.
If you consistantly go to bed at 12:30AM, and wake at 7:30 AM on a regular basis, then you will accustom the body to a routine, like with other things I.E. diet, metabolism, etc etc.
If you stagger the bodies sleep times, it won't accustom as easily, so you may find you don't recharge the body, in as prime a way as you'd like.
So as long as you're getting 7-8 hours a night, and trying to have a consistant sleep and therefore wake time, you could develop a pretty good Circadian rythmn.

I think just stress, I am pretty much always on the go. I don't know what started it but I just started waking up early and could not go back to sleep. mind would start thinking of all of the things I had to do that day so I would get up and get some stuff done around the house before work. So now at 3 I just wake up. I think internal alarm goes off then.
I am hoping to get back to a 4-4:30 schedule.
When you can sleep in do you? I get up at that time everyday.
I have tried laying there and going back to sleep but it usually does not work for me.

you need to find a "release" before going to bed...shut off all thoughts...the brain woreks less wartching tv then when you're doing absolutely nothing so watching old sitcom re-runs is a good idea...i do this when i'm hung over as i don't want/have to think, i already know what happens...not movies as they go too long and you may feel the need to stay awake for all of it...reading an old book is the same...just something that wont get you excited mentally really
