Inappropriateness at the gym (!)

Post by darius3000 »

One day, I was approached by a young man who, suddenly, starting flicking the fat portion of left pec (I'm a guy, BTW!). He insisted he wasn't trying to be "funny" (can't remember the word he used). He then told me all the ways I could "fill out" pecs, which looked like "titties", he said. Unbelieveable! I mean, I know pecs aren't like Arnold's, but there are some at the gym who aren't anywhere near as good as mine. Anyhoo...wouldn't you say this guy crossed the line? I know he wasn't hitting on me, but because of the cultural inappropriateness of this move, I won't be taking him up on his offer to train with him (he did look good btw, 3 gunshot scars on him and everything!)

Has anything like this ever happend to you? On the flip side, I recently had a really nice guy, who's pretty fit, compliment me on progress (2 times, in fact). and the other day mention back was wider. This was much more appropriate, I thought. Have you yourself ever wanted to compliment a guy on his physique and did you or didn't you and why or why not?

Sincerely,
darius

I avoid doing that publicly. Have occasionally done it here when someones posting pictures, (he's obviously looking for feedback), but in the Gym, I wouldn't really do that, unless I was asked, or someone brought it up in a third person context.

I wouldn't say anything without some kind of verbal prompt, except maybe a quirky gut comment .

Um yeah that dude was totally inappropriate. How did you respond to his "titty" comment?

Inappropriateness at the gym... at old gym there was a chick who was constantly informing me on things I needed to change with routine, ways I could improve, and areas in which I needed to improve. I'm all for people giving me advice and sharing their knowledge... thats obviously how we learn. However, this chick was about 65 lbs heavier than me and while I was showing up to the gym on a daily basis she was only there once a month or so... just long enough to pop in and tell everyone what they were doing wrong. Very annoying. I wanted to suggest that she take her own advice.

I actually compliment people at the gym all the time.... I'm a chick but I'll compliment anybody and everybody who seems to be working hard and making gains. It makes people feel good, its boosts confidence, and it lets them know that their progress is noticable. I think we all have times where we wonder if our hard work is ever going to pay off (I know I definitely do!) and we feel like we're beating our heads against the freaking wall. Its nice to get a compliment once in a while. I'm all about the positive reinforcement. :)

Totally understandable. You realise that the saying it's 80% mental and 20% physical is probably true. You question sometimes why you do it, you wonder if you'll still be up to the job, in 10, 20, 30 years time. Will you still be so focused, will you still have that drive, will it feel harder and more difficult ot make tyhat 80% mental come through for you?

Then you wonder if you're tempting fate, thinking about it, and in the end you get on and do it, because somewhere in the back of your mind, you know what might happen if you don't, and if you're looking back in 30, 40, 50+ years time wondering why you don't feel so good, you'll know you messed up, when you had a good thing going on, and you let yourself lose some of that 80% mental, until it declined to a point where the 20% physical suffered too.

It's alright to question yourself on these matters, and it's totally human. I don't think anyone here can say honestly they've never done it, started out with purpose, known it would be 100% the way they thought, 100% of the results they wanted, no worries, no fuss, no problemo, and if they're new ot this, and saying that, then they live in cloud cuckoo land, because you can't fight how you feel, when sometimes you just lose sight temporarily of the short and long-term.

In the end it's all good :)

At the first gym i went to, there were really few members so i knew all of them.

At the second one, i got pissed off (i get pissed off easily but don't answer or anything,,, there is always someone more pissed than me so...it is not worth doing anything to someone u don't know) when someone told me that i should do shoulder press seated in a not-nice way. I said "OK, whatever" but i'm sure i wanted to punch that guy (bigger than me though  ).

At current gym (2 months time) someone asked what bent over rows really does. He was bigger than me, really nice talking and all. So i am happy.

Inappropriate is when I ask you to spot me, and you lift the weight rather than spotting me. Then tell me, hey that's good for a girl when I get pissed and say you don't know what spotting is.
Happened today, it never ceases to amaze me how many guys who are well built have no idea how to spot a woman on a bench press.
